Will Power to Youth in Richmond, VA

Summer 2007, Shakespeare Festival/LA’s national model youth development program Will Power to Youth started offering its innovative combination of job training, live performance, and community building to youth on the East Coast. 23 young locals (ages 14-18) explored themes of community and culture by studying both Romeo and Juliet and the vibrant world of 1930s Richmond.
The play was set in the Richmond’s historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. Period costumes and sets designed by the youth, Shakespeare’s still-relevant text, and the enthusiasm of the cast formed an electric combination that brought the old neighborhood back to life.
The seven-week job training and arts enrichment program culminated in FREE public performances of the youth’s original adaptation at the Firehouse Theater from August 23-25, 2007. Each show ended with thunderous applause. Additionally, the excited participants answered audience questions in post-show talkback sessions, discussing their experiences—with the program, with Shakespeare, and with each other.
Like its L.A. counterpart, Will Power to Youth Richmond took a unique, interdisciplinary approach to making the Bard accessible to youth who don’t often attend or participate in live theater. The program encouraged artistic expression while integrating conflict resolution, human relations training, and literacy skill building.
